What was Bacon's Rebellion?
Before the 1680's, indentured servants did most of the work in America. The problem was that the indentured servants didn't exactly get the treatment they expected. When they got here, the conditions were poor, many were beaten by their masters, and the land that was included in their freedom dues, a type of payment for their work, was hard to farm due to bad soil and being so close to the Native Americans in the Appalachian Mountains.
The Indentured servants had had enough. A man named Nathaniel Bacon stepped up for the rights of the servants. Bacon, a colonist and a lawyer of Virginia, met a camp of volunteers to defy the infamous Governor Berkly and begin the rebellion. After much begging from the small group of angered former and current servants, Bacon agreed to help them.
Unfortunately, Bacon became very ill. He suffered from a very common disease called dysentery. Dysentery is a disease that was caused by drinking contaminated water. It eventually killed Bacon, and the rebellion collapsed.
Governor Berkly soon crushed the rebellion. He later wreaked revenge on the colonists who were a part of the rebellion. Many followers of Bacon's rebellion were hanged. This caused many other people to look up to Bacon himself and want to jump into the frying pan with him.
